The Morton Maidens traveled to Denver City for a tournament that lasted the weekend last week where they finished off 2-1 throughout the tournament and ended their weekend off with a win.
The first game of the tournament the team faced off against the Seagraves Lady Eagles where they team won 2419.
The Maidens started off strong defensively as they held Seagraves to no points, while they were able to get eight of theirs to go.
The second quarter of the game was similar as Morton had 10 more points to go while their defense stifled the Lady Eagles, holding them to three points in the first half of the game.
The leading scorer for the Maidens at the half was Aerieana Rodriguez who had seven points with five of them coming from the first quarter of play.
In the third quarter the Maidens kept the pressure as both teams scored seven in the third.
Morton held the lead with a score of 17-10 at the end of the third.
Although it was a very close game in the end with Seagraves scoring nine and holding Morton to seven, it was the Maidens who took the win.
The team did well as they forced many turnovers and did not slow down in the end when the game was decided.
The leading scorer of the game was Rodriguez who had 17 points in the game, with most of them coming from in the paint.
Blaize Garza got in on the scoring action with three points. Alexiah Garza and Ruby Gutierrez both finished the game with two points a piece.
With the Maidens starting off the tournament 1-0 they had to go against the Denver City Fillies.
The team lost to Denver City 66-33 due to the teams high powered offense at each position.
The girls were outscored 3223 in the first half of the game as leading the team in scoring was Rodriguez who had 10 points at the half.
In the end though it was a tough battle for Morton as they wouldn’t be able to keep up with the Fillies as the Maidens were held to only 10 points in the second half.
Denver City ran with the win as the Maidens progressed to 1-1 in the tournament.
The leading scorer for the Maidens against Denver City was Rodriguez who had 14 points with nine of them coming from the free throw line.
Guttierez had eight, Holland had seven, Alexiah Garza and Blaize Garza both finished with two on the day.
They faced off against the Alpine Lady Bucks for the last game of the tournament.
Morton would be able to take the win in the teams last game of the tournament 54-43.
The game started off with both offenses getting to work as neither teams defenses had answers for each other.
In the first half of the game Morton would trail Alpine 31-27 with the leading scorer at the half for the Maidens being Rodriguez and Holland who had nine points each.
The Maidens were able to bounce back though as they tightened up on defense only allowing 13 second half points in the game while scoring another 27.
The leading scorer for the team was Holland who had 20 with seven of her points coming from the third quarter of play.
Rodriguez had 19 on the night with four coming from free throws, Garza had 10, Yanez had three and Gutierrez finished with two.
The team had another tournament they played this past weekend at Plains to finish before their break.
