Turning the ball over five times, the Morton Indians struggled with finishing offensive drives, resulting in only scoring 15 points and falling to the Tahoka Bulldogs 51-15.
Being able to take care of the ball is going to be the “focus,” Morton’s head coach Trevor Bulmer said for this week to negate negative drives for their offense.
In addition to focusing on limited turnovers, coach Bulmer is looking to develop a defense that can create turnovers of their own and be positive in the turnover battle.
One approach Bulmer has in mind to generate more turnovers starts with stopping the run and forcing teams into more predictable passing situations.
“We have to do a better job on early downs, getting teams to more passing situations where we know what they have to do,” Bulmer said about keeping opposing offenses behind the chains.
The run game will not just be emphasized on defense but on offense, as coach Bulmer believes there is a lot of potential in that area of the game.
“We want to run the ball a little bit more and rely on our offensive line. I think it’s a group that has a ton of potential to be very good,” Bulmer said. “I think our backs have potential to do some really good things, so we definitely want to run the ball more.”
Going head-to-head this week versus Dimmit, the game plan to stop the run and ignite their own run game will be more critical versus their opponent, who is accustomed to making explosive plays as they average 53.6 points per game.
“We’re just going to have to be very good against the run,” Bulmer said. “That’s where we’ll have opportunities to get them off the field or create turnovers. Offensively, we have to run the ball a lot better this week.”
The Indians look for their game plan to bring them their first win of the season versus Dimmit at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18.
