The Morton Indians took on the Seagraves Eagles this past Friday for the team’s season opener where the Indians would win in a shutout with the score 28-0 on the road.
In the first quarter of the game, Brayden Villarreal scored from three yards out and the Morton offense got the twopoint conversion to make the score 8-0.
The team wasn’t done as they handed the ball right back to Villarreal in the second quarter to punch the ball in from one-yard out, this time not getting the twopoint conversion to make the score 14-0.
Both offenses wouldn’t do much in the third quarter as there wasn’t scoring until the fourth quarter where E.J. Rivas caught an 84-yard pass from Dante Chavez to give the Indians another touchdown as they got the two point conversion to make the score 22-0.
Rivas kept it up for the final score of the game came from him off of another 36 yard pass from Chavez with the PAT being no good to make the final score 28-0.
The Morton offense did well in their season opener as they had 400 total yards off offense with 286 coming through the air and 114 going on the ground. The team earned 15 first down with only one turnover and five penalties going for 15 yards.
Chavez through for 218 yards in the air with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Villarreal also threw a little bit as he had 68 yards through the air with no interceptions.
Villarreal led the Indians in rushing yards with 54 on the night with two touchdowns and no fumbles. Christain Enriquez had another 43 yards for the team with one fumble on the night. Lane Lyon had 11 yards and Chavez had six on the night.
The Morton defense stood tall all night long as they only let up 204 yards of total offense from the Seagraves Eagles with 168 yards coming on the ground and 36 through the air.
Seagraves was only able to get seven first downs with four turnovers and three penalties for 38 yards.
Cade Lyon led the team in tackling with six tackles and four assists.
Villarreal had three tackles and three assists, Enriquez had three tackles and five assists.
Hezekiah Silvas had two tackles, seven assists, one sack and one tackle for loss.
A.J. Mendoza had two tackles with four assists.
Adrian Luevno had two tackles with one assist and one tackle for loss.
Jaeden Alvarado had one tackle with five assists.
Britton Boggs had one tackle with three assists.
Dante Chavez had one tackle and Rivas had one tackle with two assists.
Lane Lyon had three assists, Jorge Regalado had three assists and Bishop Keeling had two assists.
Villarreal and Rivas both had one interception on the night along with Enriquez’s two forced fumbles.
The Indians faced off with the Wheeler Mustangs this past Friday on the road and get ready to take on the Eunice, NM Cardinals at home at 7 p.m.
