Panthers remain undefeated in district play

The #9 Whitharral Panthers hosted the Morton Indians this past Tuesday where they outlasted the Indians 51-48.

The game throughout the night was a very close one as both teams were going back and forth and not letting up defensively.

The first quarter of the game started off with Whitharral taking 15-to-7 lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter of play is where Morton found their feet and was able to keep up with the Panthers as both teams put up 15 points before the half.

The score at the halftime break was Whitharral leading Morton 30-22.

Leading the Indians in scoring at the halftime break was Lane Lyon as he had six points at the break with all of them coming from beyond the arch.

For Whitharral the leading scorer at the half was Jack Griffin who was able to get seven of his own points, three of them coming from his free throw shooting.

Going into the third quarter of play Morton was able to catch back up by holding the Panthers to only 12 points in the third while getting another 15. The score at the end of the third quarter was Whitharral leading 42-37.

The final quarter of play, the Indians were able to go on a run and take the lead with 3:40 left in the fourth quarter with the score sitting at Morton leading 44-42.

In the final seconds of the game though, Whitharral was able to battle back and keep the game away from the Indians as they took the close win at home in district play.

Leading the Panthers in scoring on the night was Brent Robinson who finished the game with 14 points on the night, eight of them coming from the second half of the game.

Landon Lee had another 11 points for the team, Nomar Gomez had nine, Griffin finished the game with eight, Nate Sansom had seven and Brolin Kennedy had two in the teams win.

For the Indians the leading scorers against the Panthers were both Alex Lopez and Lane Lyon who both finished with 10 points on the night.

Lane Lyon finished the game with eight on the night, two more Indians finished with six points in Andres Bejarano and E.J Rivas, A.J. Mendoza had four and both Anibal Casteneda and Britton Boggs had two points a piece.

The Morton Indians fall to 16-8 on the regular season while going 4-2 in district play losing only to Whitharral twice.

The Indians next game of the season is against the Meadow Broncos this Tuesday as the visiting team at 7:30 p.m.

The Whitharral Panthers progressed to 18-4 on the season while remaining undefeatd in district play with a perfect 7-0 record sitting at the top of the district.

The Panthers next game of district play is against the Anton Bulldogs this Tuesday at home at 7:30 p.m.
