Ropes downs Bobcats for first game in series

The Ropes Eagles took on the Smyer Bobcats this past Monday as the visiting team in UIL District Baseball where the Eagles won 21-8 after five innings.

Ropes was the first team on the board in the top of the first inning after Austin Martinez made Kade Franklin hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring one run, Colton Mortensen drew a walk, scoring one run, Elijah Flores singled, scoring two runs and Branson Simental doubled, scoring three runs, making the score 7-0 early.

Smyer was able to respond by having three runs of their own. Aiden Martinez hit a fly ball and reached on an error sending in Skylar Pond and Colton Burriss and Aiden Martinez scored on a passed ball.

The Eagles added four more runs in the top of the second inning on four hits. Kade Franklin homered to left field, scoring two runs, Mortensen doubled, scoring one run and Flores singled, scoring one run to make the score 11-3.

In the bottom of the second inning, Bobcat Austin Martinez doubled on a fly ball to center field to drive in Mason Medart to make the score 11-4.

Ropes didn’t slow down in the top of the third inning after they scored seven runs on five hits. Kade Franklin drew a walk, scoring one run, Braxxin Partington singled, scoring two runs, Brady Bryan singled, scoring one run, Simental singled, scoring one run and Mason Marmolejo tripled, scoring two runs to extend the Eagles lead to 18-4.

Ropes added onto their lead in the top of the fifth after Bode Franklin doubled on a line drive to right field to send in Mortensen and Flores and a pop out by Marmolejo, scoring one run to make the score 21-4.

The final four runs by Smyer happened in the bottom of the fifth inning after Burriss doubled on a ground ball to left field, scoring two runs and Aiden Martinez homered on a fly ball to left field, scoring two runs, making the final score 21-8.

Kade Franklin earned the win for the Eagles as he gave up three hits and four runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out three and walking two.

Flores pitched in relief for the Eagles as he gave up two hits and no runs over one inning, striking out two and walking none.

Ford took the loss for Smyer as he gave up seven hits and seven runs (seven earned) in two innings, striking out none and walking three.

Jose Paredes appeared in relief for the Bobcats as he gave up one hits and three runs (three earned) over one inning, striking out nonoe and walking three.

Colton Burriss also came in relief for Smyer as he gave up four hits and four runs (four earned) over one and one-third innings, striking out two and walking one.

Austin Martinez started out on the mound for Smyer as he pitched for two-third innings, giving up three hits and seven runs (one earned), striking out none and walking four.

Ropes tallied up 15 hits in the game. Marmolejo, Franklin, Flores, Simental and Kanon Buckner each collected two hits for the Eagles. Flores and Simental were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in three runs for the Eagles. Brayden Hogg led the team with four walks as the team as a whole had 11 on the night. Mortensen and Marmolejo each stole multiple bases in the game as the team had six throughout. The Eagles turned in one double play.

For the Bobcats they had eight hits throughout the game. Burriss led the team in hits as he had two. Aiden Martinez led the team in RBI’s as he drove in two runners.

The Ropes Eagles progress to 18-6 on the season while sitting in second place in district behind New Home with their district record at 6-1.

The Smyer Bobcats fall to 107-1 on the season as they sit in third place with a 5-4 district record behind New Home and Ropes.

The Ropes Eagles and Smyer Bobcats will play their last game against each other this Friday at Ropes at 4 p.m.
