Roughettes cruise past Sunray for first game

The Sundown Roughettes traveled to Plainview this past Tuesday to kick off their three game series against the Sunray Lady Cats for UIL Softball Playoffs where the Roughettes won the first game of the series 16-1.

Sundown was the first team on the board in the top of the first inning after Breigh Gregory singled, Destiny Garza singled, Camry Jourden grounded out and Araceli Ibarra walked, each scoring one run to make the score 4-0 early.

The Lady Cats would get their only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning after an error by the Roughettes got a runner home to make the score 41.

The Roughettes were able to extend their lead in the top of the second inning by another four runs after Brynly Gregory doubled, scoring a run, Breigh Gregory singled, scoring one run and Camry Jourden singled, scoring two runs to make the score 8-1.

In the top of the third inning Sundown had three more runs after Breigh Gregory singled on a ground ball to third base, scoring one run and Garza singled on a line drive to center field, scoring two runs to extend the Sundown lead 11-1.

Sundown kept pouring it on the top of the fourth inning after Emry Jourden walked, scoring one run, Brynly Gregory grounded into fielder’s choice, scoring one run and Breigh Gregory tripled, scoring two runs to make the score 15-1.

The Roughettes got their final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning after Paola Huerta hit a double on a fly ball to left field to send in Ibarra and make the final score 16-1.

Gregory earned the win for the Roughettes as she gave up one hits and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out nine and walking none in the game.

Brynly and Breigh Gregory were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected three hits for the Roughettes. Sundown was able to tally up 13 hits throughout the game. Gregory drove the middle of the lineup as she led the team with four runs batted in, going 3-for-4 on the day. Garza and Huerta each collected multiple hits for Sundown. Emry Jourden paced the Roughettes with two walks while the team had five in the game.

The Sundown Roughettes lead the series 1-0 and continued their series facing them again this past Saturday at 12 p.m.
