Roughettes split series against Floydada

The Sundown Roughettes played against the Floydada Lady Winds this past Friday and Saturday where they split the series winning Friday and losing Saturday on the road.

For the team’s first matchup against Floydada, Sundown hosted them where they won in a very close game.

The Roughettes were the first team on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Breigh Gregory doubled, Destiny Garza singled and Camry Jourden singled, each scoring one run to make the score 3-0 early for Sundown.

Floydada was able to answer back in the top of the second inning after they had two runs go for them after two solo home runs got the score to 3-2, Sundown still leading.

Sundown was able to extend their lead in the bottom of the second inning after Gregory singled and Araceli Ibarra grounded out, each scoring one run to make the score 5-2, Roughettes leading.

In the bottom of the third inning, Sundown had one more run to extend their lead to four after Gregory hit a triple to send in Emry Jourden making the score 62.

Floydada was able to get one more run in the top of the fourth inning after the Lady Winds scored on an error making the score 6-3 halfway through the game.

Sundown added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on four hits. Emry Jourden hit a solo home run to left field, and Camry Jourden singled, scoring two runs. The score sat at 9-3, Roughettes leading.

The Lady Winds were able to cut into the Sundown lead after they got two runs in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the Roughette lead 9-5.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Roughette lead vanished as Floydada tied the game at nine a piece.

Sundown was able to take the game in the very end at the bottom of the seventh inning after Gregory singled on a hard ground ball to second baseman to give Sundown the first win of the series.

Gregory earned the win for the Roughettes as she gave up nine hits and nine runs (three earned) over seven innings, striking out five and walking five.

The Roughettes tallied 16 hits throughout the game. Gregory provided pop in the middle of the lineup, leading the Roughettes with three runs batted in. The pitcher went 4-for-4 on the day. Gregory and Jourden each collected four hits for Sundown. Gregory and Jourden also each collected hits for Sundown.

Floydada 11, Sundown 10

For both team’s second matchup of the series Sundown dropped the game as the away team in the very end.

In the top of the first inning, Sundown was able to get a 3-0 lead after Garza singled, Camry Jourden doubled and Floydada committed an error, each scoring one run.

Floydada answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning, after their batter hit a double on a line drive to center field to bring in a runner to make the score 3-1.

The Roughettes were able to send in two more runner after one batter singled on a fly ball to center field while another hit a double on a line drive to center field as well to make the score 6-1.

The Lady Winds were able to get another run in the bottom of the second inning after their batter hit a solo home run to center field to make the score 6-2, Roughettes still leading.

In the bottom of the third inning, Floydada was able to tie the game at six a piece after they had four runs go for them.

In the top of the fourth inning, Sundown was able to break the tie when Breigh Gregory singled, scoring one run, then an error followed to extend the Roughettes lead to 9-6.

The Lady Winds got two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after their batter hit a home run to left field to close the gap at 9-8, Sundown still leading.

The Roughettes got their final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Ibarra singled on a line drive to right field to make the score 10-8.

In the bottom of the sixth inning for Floydada they scored one run off of an error to get the score closer with it sitting at 10-9.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Floydada was able to take the big win off of a home run that sent in two runners to make the score 11-10 and give the Lady Winds the last second win.

Gregory started in the circle for the Roughettes as she allowed eight hits and eight runs (six earned) over three ane one-third innings, striking out one and walking one.

Destiny Garza came in for relief for Sundown as she gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) over two and two-third innings, striking out one and walking one.

Sundown piled up 12 hits in the game. Ibarra went 2-for-4 at the plate as the right-handed hitter led the team with three runs batted in. Brynly Gregory went 3for-5 at the plate to lead the Roughettes in hits. Gregory, Garza and Jourden each collected multiple hits for Sundown.

The Sundown Roughettes take their first loss in a little over a month since they lost to Forsan March 2nd.

The Roughettes progress to 24-4-1 on the season while going up to 11-1 in district play tied with Floydada at first place.

The Roughettes will finish up district play with their two game series against Hale Center as they played this past Tuesday and will play them this upcoming Saturday at home at 11 a.m.
