Roughettes take down Sudan Lady Nettes in series

The Sundown Roughettes took on the Sudan Lady Nettes last Monday and this past Saturday where the Roughettes swept the series to remain undefeated in district play.

Sundown 14, Sudan 3

Sundown’s first matchup against Sudan was last Monday where the team won 14-3 at home.

Sundown was the first team on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Breigh Gregory singled and Araceli Ibarra grounded out, each scoring one run making the score 2-0 early.

The Roughettes extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning by four runs after Allie McCormick singled, scoring one run, Emry Jourden homered to center field, scoring two runs and Gregory singled, scoring one run. The score sat at 6-0 after two innings.

In the top of the third inning, Sudan was able to get on the board after their batter hit a double and the Roughettes committed an error to bring in two runners to make the score 6-2, with Sundown still holding the lead.

The Roughettes scored two more runs in the bottom of the third off of a home run slam to center field by Jourden to make the score 8-2.

In the top of the fourth, Sudan was able to get another run off of an error making the score 83.

Sundown had another boom in offensive production as they got six runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Jourden drew a walk, scoring one run, Brynly Gregory tripled, scoring three runs, Gregory singled, scoring one run and Destiny Garza singled, scoring one run.

Sundown was able to put the game away in five innings after their defense held strong and didn’t let Sudan get any more runs in the game.

Gregory started for the Roughettes as she gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings, striking out seven and walking one.

Sundown collected 17 hits in the game. Gregory went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Roughettes in hits. Gregory, Garza, Camry Jourden and Paola Huerta each collected multiple hits for Sundown. Emry Jourden had a great game as she hit two home runs and drove in four in the team’s win.

Sundown 17, Sudan 4

For the Roughettes second matchup they traveled to Sudan this time around where they won 17-4 to sweep the Lady Nettes.

The Roughetts were able to jump out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Frynly Gregory doubled, scoring one run, Breigh Gregory doubled, scoring one run, an error committed by Sudan scored two runs and Jourden doubled, scoring three runs.

Although the Roughettes were able to jump out to an early lead, Sudan wasn’t going away as the batter hit a home run with two runners on bases to get three runs in the bottom of the first to put the score at 7-3.

In the top of the second inning Sundown was able to add to their lead with two runs after Ibarra singled, and Ericka Posadas grounded out, each scoring one run.

The Roughettes poured it on as they had seven runs on five hits go for them in the top of the third inning. Jourden tripled, scoring two runs, Greogry grounded out, scoring one run, Camry Jourden singled, scoring one run, Posadas doubled, scoring two runs and Huerta singled, scoring one run. The score sat at 16-3 with Sundown leading.

Sudan got their final run of the game in the bottom of the third inning after the batter hit single to drive in one runner to make the score 16-4.

Sundown had their final run in the top of the fifth inning after Posadas grounded out, sending in Camry Jourden to make the final score 17-4.

Gregory earned the win for the Roughettes as she gave up five hits and four runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out six and walking one..

The Roughettes had 13 hits throughout the game. Gregory, Garza and Jourden each collected multiple hits for the Roughettes. Gregory was able to steal two bases in the game.

The Roughettes progress to 23-3-1 on the season while staying undefeated in disrict play with a 10-0 record as they played against the Floydada Lady Whirlwinds this past Tuesday and will face them again this upcoming Saturday as the visiting team at 11 a.m.
