The Sundown Roughnecks faced off against the Seagraves Eagles in UIL District Baseball play this past Saturday and Monday where they won their first matchup 25-5 and their second one 16-3.
Sundown 25, Seagraves 5
For the Roughnecks first matchup at home against the Eagles on Saturday the Roughnecks run-ruled them 25-5 after five innings.
Sundown was the first team on the board during the team’s game as Jaxon Rodriguez tripled, scoring two runs, giving the Roughnecks an early 2-0 lead.
The Roughnecks extended their lead by another seven runs in the bottom of the second off of three hits. Rodriguez drew a walk, scoring one run, Hunter Clark doubled, scoring two runs, Isaac Lopez drew a walk, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Rian Rose doubled, scoring one run and Coen Nevarez doubled, scoring one run to make the score 9-0.
Seagraves answered in the top of the third after they were able to get five runs on four hits cutting Sundown’s lead 9-5.
Sundown had another great inning in the bottom of the third after they scored six runs on two hits. Lopez was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, an error scored one run, Rayden Flores singled, scoring two runs, Rose singled, scoring one run and a steal of home scored one run, making the score 15-5.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Sundown put the game away by getting 10 runs to put the final score of the game at 25-5 to take the first win of the two game series.
Caleb Clausen earned the win for the Roughnecks as he gave up four hits and five runs over three innings, striking out four and walking two.
Rose threw for two innings in relief for the Roughnecks as he gave up zero hits, striking out three and walking none.
Sundown tallied up 15 hits in the team’s game. Clark led the Roughnecks with three hits in four at bats. Rose, Farrar and Rodriguez each drove in three runs for Sundown. Lopez, Nevarez and Martinez each collected multiple hits for the Roughnecks. Sundown had patience throughout the game piling up nine walks. Clausen, Martinez and Rodriguez led the team with two free passes each.
Sundown 16, Seagraves 3
For their second matchup at Seagraves it was Sundown again that completed the sweep on the Eagles to improve their district record.
The Roughnecks were the first team on the board off of a single on a hard ground ball by Caleb Clausen, scoring one run.
Sundown extended their lead in the top of the second inning after Clausen doubled on a line drive to right field, scoring two runs making the score 3-0 early.
In the top of the third inning Sundown was able to earn themselves two more runs after Coen Nevarez hit a single on a fly ball to right field, scoring two runs and making the score 5-0 fast.
The Roughnecks were able to explode offensively as they had nine runs go for them in the fourth inning. Isaac Lopez doubled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Rian Rose doubled, scoring two runs, another error scored two runs, Clausen singled, scoring one run and Hunter Clark doubled, scoring two runs.
To finish off the scoring for Sundown they got their final two runs in the top of the fifth inning after Jayson Martinez grounded out, scoring one run ande Hayden Powell singled on a line drive to right field, scoring one run to make the score 16-0.
Seagraves finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning getting three runs, but it was too late as the Roughnecks took the big district win and complete the sweep on Seagraves.
Lopez earned the win for the Roughnecks as he gave up two hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out three and walking one.
Jaxon Rodriguez pitched three innings in relief for the Roughnecks as he gave up two hits and three runs while striking out six and walking four throughout the game.
Sundown was able to pile up 14 hits in the game. Nevarez and Rose each collected multiple hits for the Roughnecks.
Sundown moves up to 7-8 on the season while their district record improves to 3-4.
The team’s next game is against the Post Antelopes this upcoming Saturday at home at 11 a.m. and again next Tuesday as the visiting team at 7 p.m.
