Sundown visited New Deal to take on the district leading Lions Friday night with a possible playoff berth on the line and left with a 45-20 defeat. The first quarter belonged to the defenses until the Lions scored with 1:26 left in the quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The Roughnecks matched that score with 26 seconds to go on a 17-yard Ricky Melendez run and a PAT from Alex Bocanegra to end the first quarter tied at seven. New Deal made a field goal at the 7:06 mark in the second to lead, 10-7, but the Roughnecks Bocanegra scored on a nine-yard run with 1:15 left in the half and put through the PAT .
Sundown took a 14-10 lead heading into halftime.
New Deal took the lead back at 8:57 in the third quarter and missed the PAT to make the score, 16-14.
Adan Escamilla completed a pass to Koy Torres for a six-yard score.
The Roughnecks went for a two-point conversion, but failed and led, 20-16.
The rest of the game belonged to the Lions as the Roughnecks seemed to lose their focus.
The Lions scored four times to close the game including backto- back interceptions that were returned for touchdowns and a 45-20 victory over the Roughnecks.
The Roughnecks will need a Post or Floydada loss and a victory over Tahoka to make the playoffs.
The Roughnecks will play host to the Tahoka Bulldogs on Friday night.
