Roughnecks earn first district win

Sundown played host to the 1- 0 Olton Mustangs Friday Night and earned their first district win of the season with a 49-32 victory. Sundown jumped out to a quick two score lead as Hunter Tindol and Rickey Melendez both found the end-zone on the ground and the first quarter ended with the Roughnecks up, 14-0. Olton answered with a pair of passing touchdowns in the second to tie the game, before Jaryn Flores broke a 52-yard scoring run. A penalty led to a long PAT attempt and Jaxon hauled in a pass from Adan Escamilla for the conversion and an eight-point lead. Olton scored to close within a point then Jayson Martinez broke a 71-yard score and after a defensive stop Koy Torres added a 39-yard scoring run and Sundown had a 36-20 lead. The Mustangs scored on a pass with 0:07 left in the half, but the Roughneck defense halted the two-point conversion short of the goal and at halftime sundown led the Mustangs, 36-26. Olton received the opening kick, but the Roughneck defense held and the offense took over. Melendez found the end-zone with a six-yard run. The Roughnecks found the end-zone again after the defense forced a fumble and Melendez scooped it up and went 39-yards to score with 0:03 left in the third. Alex Bocanegra had his first miss on six PATs and the score was Sundown, 49-26. The Mustangs provided the only score in the fourth on a pass and the failed two-point conversion left the final score, 49- 32. After the game Coach Rogers was pleased for his team to get that first district win and that the team is starting to find their identity. Sundown moved to 1-1 in district play and traveled to Post Friday to face a 2-0 Lions squad.
