Roughnecks’ homecoming spoiled by Wildcats, 56-14

The Roughnecks (1-1) hosted the Wink Wildcats (3-0) for Homecoming and were defeated 56-14.

Sundown fell behind after Wink scored on their opening possession and then Wink scored again after forcing a fumble on Sundown’s first drive.

A bad snap over the Roughneck punter’s head allowed Wink to capitalize on a very short field and Sundown was in a 21-0 hole in the first quarter.

Isaiah Flores scored on a sustained Roughneck drive in the second quarter, but Wink took advantage of defensive miscues to add another pair of scores and Sundown trailed 35-7 at the half.

Wink scored twice more in the third to lead 49-7 heading into the fourth.

Sundown gave up another score in the fourth, but then the offense answered with a long drive capped off by a short pass from Adan Escamilla to Johnny Acevedo.

Acevedo dipped into the center of the field, then bounced outside and outran the defenders 25 yards to score.

The Roughnecks fell 56-14. Both the offense and defense were out of synch that led to missed blocks, which stopped promising drives for Sundown and allowed big plays to the Wildcats.

The Roughnecks did a much better job with ball security this week but are still a team struggling to find their identity and become a cohesive unit.

They will look to continue making improvement when they travel to Roosevelt to play a tough Eagle squad on Friday the 23rd
