The Smyer Bobcats traveled to Plains to take on the Cowboys where the Bobcats stumbled 2212, on the road.
It was a very defensive game in the first quarter of the game. Neither team was able to get the edge on each other.
In the second quarter of the game, the Bobcats got on the board first with a 43-yard run from Rylan Smith to make the score 6-0 after the missed twopoint conversion. Plains answered back with a score of their own. They were able to punch the ball into the endzone from one-yard out to make the score 8-6 after they got their two-point conversion.
Smyer answered back before the half after they were able to force a punt, where Smith was able to return the punt 76-yards to make the score 12-8, after another missed two-point conversion.
Although Smyer was leading at the half, it didn’t last long as it was all Plains in the second half.
The Cowboys scored twice in the third quarter.
One touchdown was a 50yard run to give Plains the lead, 14-12, after they failed their twopoint conversion. Their last touchdown was from four-yards out to make the final score 22-12, after they made their two-point conversion.
Skyler Pond led the Bobcats in passing with 149 yards, one touchdown and six interceptions.
Leading Smyer in rushing yards was Mike Benevedes with six carries for 22 yards. Smith had six carries for 20 yards, Ryan Gutierrez had two carries for 19 yards and Pond had four carries for 17 yards.
Leading the team in receiving yards was Gutierrez with five catches for 70 yards. Smith had four catches for 60 yard and one touchdown and Mattox had five carries for 30 yards and one fumble.
On the defensive side of the ball for Smyer the leading tackler was Matheu Corder with 11 total tackles. Alex Mattox had nine, Gutierrez and Micah Stevens both had six tackles, Benevedes had five, Caleb Pearce had four, Haden Cooper and Wes Travis both had three tackles and Tango Pastusek and Pond both had two tackles. Three Bobcats had one sack on the night with Corder, Stevens and Pearce.
The Smyer Bobcats fall to 0-9 on the season while going down to 0-4 in district play.
The team’s last game of the season will be against the Tahoka Bulldogs this Friday at home at 7 p.m.
