“I think it’s a testament to how our kids don’t stop,” Smyer’s Head Coach, Scott Funke, said about his team scoring the most points this season in the 61-20 loss versus the Plains Cowboys.
“I think they bought in,” Funke said. “There’s a lot of learning and improvement and oneplay- at-a-time mentality.”
Smyer trailed 54-0 at halftime, but the offense started to find itself as the Bobcats outscored Plains 20-7 in the second half.
The passing attack was led by junior quarterback Cash Pastusek, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 157 yards, adding three touchdowns through the air. (classification) Wide receiver Noah Gonzales, freshman wide receiver Frankie Rodriguez, and sophomore Jacob Davis all caught touchdown passes.
“He’s (Cash) improved his throwing technique as the year has gone on,” Funke said as Pastusek transitioned from being a center to a quarterback.
Despite falling 0-2 in District 2-2A, the Bobcats’ confidence has risen in the locker room as Coach Funke sees his squad playing with less “apprehension,” and more freely.
“They’re not quite as scared as they were,” Funke said. “Now they can focus on what they’re supposed to do than what’s about to happen.” Smyer (0-7, 0-2) will take on another winless team in Morton (0-7, 0-2) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 at home. Coach Funke says taking “chances” will be part of their game plan.
“Maybe take some chances. That’s what we’re going to do this week,” Funke said. “Try to get some easy reads for some guys to get them out in space.
