Smyer Lady Cats beat Sundown in district play

The Smyer Lady Cats hosted the Sundown Roughettes this past Tuesday night for district play where the Lady Cats won 6553.

In the first quarter of the game, Sundown took control of the game fast after their defense was on point as they outscored Smyer 14-4, going into the second quarter.

Although the Roughettes were off to a hot start, the Lady Cats weren’t giving up as they went into the second quarter with some fire and outscored Sundown 22-16, cutting into the Roughette lead making the score 30-26.

Leading the Lady Cats in scoring at the halftime break was Kaia Brandon with six points, all from inside the arch.

For the Roughettes their leading scorer at the half was Hannah Holdman with 12 points, six of them from long-range.

Out of the break, Smyer kept their foot on the gas as their defense showed up for the Lady Cats holding Sundown to just six points while they scored another 20 of their own to take the lead and make the score 46-38, going into the fourth quarter.

For the final quarter of play it was a good quarter for both teams as Smyer was able to put up another 19 points, as the Roughettes had another 15 of their own. Although it was a good quarter for both, Smyer was able to hold onto their lead and take the district win.

Leading the Lady Cats in scoring was Maegan Smith with 18 points on the night. Jada Hernandez had 16 points, Kira Posadas had 13, Rylee Riedel had seven, Brandon finished with six and Ellie Nelson finished with three points.

For the Roughettes the leading scorer for the team was Holdman with 15 points in their contest. Camry Jourdan had 14 points, Alyssa Paiz had 11, Kadee Riley had eight, Kyndel Taggart had four and Araceli Ibarra finished with one point.

The Smyer Lady Cats next district game is against the Whiteface Lady Lopes this Tuesday at home at 6:15 p.m. after going against the Morton Maidens on the road this past Friday For the Roughettes their next game is against the Morton Maidens this Friday on the road at 6:15 p.m. after they took on the Plains Cowgirls at home this past Friday.
