The Sundown Roughnecks had their homecoming this past Friday against the Farwell Steers who were going into the game undefeated and stayed undefeated leaving Roughneck Stadium with a score of 23-7.
Before the game started, the homecoming queens took the field and walked on with their fathers as Ariel Hernandez was the homecoming queen this year as she was nominated by her peers.
The homecoming court included Senior King and Queen Candidates Watson Evans & Clarissa Chagoya, Brayden Carr and Aubrey Rodgers, Jaden McAdams and Ariel Hernandez. Junior Prince and Princess Allie McCormick and Adan Escamilla; Sophomore Prince and Princess Marcus Solis and Emry Jourden and Freshman Prince and Princess Rylan Carr and Kyndal Taggart.
In the first half of the game it was all Farwell as they were the only team on the board with a lead of 14-0 at halftime and holding off Sundown with their tough defense.
Sundown was able to score its first touchdown off of a good run call from the coaching staff and good execution from the players with 3:15 left in the third quarter. Unfortunately, that would be the only time the team scored as Farwell was too much to handle for the team and they were able to hold them to only one touchdown in the second half.
It was a low scoring game with amazing defense’s from both sides of the ball. Sundown wasn’t able to capitalize when the team did have the ball as they also gave up a safety to the Steers defense early in the fourth quarter of play, but it was a momentum killer for the team as they were not able to bounce back.
The Sundown Roughnecks fall to 1-2 on the season, but have high hopes as they are going to face Wink as the away team, as they are coming off a close loss to Alpine and going into the the game 2-1.
Wink has a high powered offense who has competed in high scoring games, but Sundown does have a chance as the Wink defense has allowed 103 points throughout the season. The team hopes to bounce back from their loss to the undefeated Farwell Steers who progressed to 3-0 on the year.
