Sundown Roughnecks start district 2-0

The Sundown Roughnecks took on the Plains Cowboys this past Friday night on the road where they won their second district game, 48-12.

The first score of the game came from the Sundown running game as they broke off a 35-yard run to take the lead making the score 7-0 after the made PAT.

Plains responded with a score of their own through the air from 25-yards out to make the score 7-6 after the Cowboys missed their PAT.

The Roughnecks didn’t go away as they then punched the ball in from two-yards out to extend their lead 14-6 after another made PAT.

Sundown’s defense stepped up as they were able to get the ball back at the end of the first quarter for the Roughneck offense to get started on the Plains’ 36yard line. The team responded with a rushing touchdown to make the score 21-6 early in the second quarter.

The Cowboys were able to drive down the field and punch it in from three-yards out to make the score 21-12 after their failed two-point conversion. The Roughnecks were able to get another rushing touchdown towards the halftime break from 15-yards out to make the score 2812 going into the halftime break.

The Sundown defense was able to get an interception and return it to the two-yard line where the offense took over and punched it in to make the score 35-12.

The Roughnecks got back on offense towards the end of the third quarter with a nine-yard rush to make the score 41-12 after they missed their first PAT of the game.

The final score of the game came off of another rushing touchdown from five-yards out to make the final score 48-12 after their kick was good.

The Sundown offense was unstoppable on the ground as they had 354 yards of rushing with five yards passing in their contest.

Adan Escamilla led the Roughnecks in passing with three passing attempts for five yards and one interception in the game.

Braiden Lara led Sundown in rushing with five carries for 73 yards with two touchdowns.

Isaac Lopez had five carries for 64 yards and one touchdown, Coen Nevarez had two carries for 51 yards, Escamilla had five carries for 47 yards, Brayson Frey had eight carries for 42 yards and one touchdown, Marcus Solis had five carries for 26 yards and one touchdown, Toby Lopez had eight carries for 24 yards and one touchdown, Dago Chagoya had three carries for 15 yards and Trevor Bridges had two carries for seven yards and one touchdown.

Nathan Flores led the team in receiving yards having one catch for five yards.

The Sundown defense held the Plains offense to 73 rushing yards with 136 passing yards in their contest.

The Roughneck defense had two turnovers with a fumble recovery from Chagoya and one interception from Ethan Morales.

The Sundown Roughnecks progress to 2-5 on the season while going 2-0 in district play.

The Roughnecks next game of the season will be against Ropes Eagles who are still undefeated on the season at home at 7 p.m.
