Sundown Roughnecks travel to Denver City

The Sundown Roughnecks traveled to the Denver City Shootout for a tournament where they finished 2-1, losing only to Denver City.

The first game of the tournament the Roughnecks went up against the Midland Trinity Chargers where the team won in a close game 63-50.

The game was close the entire game as both teams would create a margin until the last quarter of the game when Sundown was able to pull away in the last few minutes.

The Roughnecks leading scorer for the team was Watson Evans as 13 of his points came from the back half of the game with eight free throws.

Jaxon Rodriguez was able to rack up 14, Branson Sanders had 11, Adan Escamilla had 10, Briar Miller and Edgar Mendoza each had three and Caleb Clausen was able to get two for the team.

After their win against the Chargers, the team had to go up against the Denver City Mustangs in the second game of the tournament.

The team fell to the Mustangs in a very defensive game with a score of 39-27.

The first quarter was very slow for the Roughnecks as they were only able to muster up seven points in the first quarter with four of those points coming from Evans.

The second quarter the Roughnecks kept the game a little bit closer as they held the Mustangs to 10 points while scoring 10 of their own. Going into the halftime break Sundown was trailing Denver City 22-17.

The third quarter was Sundown as they were finally able to outscore the Mustangs 8to-7 and cut the lead 29-25.

Unfortunately the Roughnecks werent able to hold on as they would only be able to get another four points in the fourth as Denver City would qrap the game up and take the win.

Sundown’s leading scorer for the team against Denver City was Evans as he was able to put up eight.

Sanders had six, three Roughnecks tallied four points in Escamilla, Powell and Rodriguez. Finally Jayson Martinez was able to get in on the scoring action as he had two in the game as well.

Sundowns struggled against the Mustangs as they shot 0 percent from beoyond the arch and 45 percent from the free throw. The team was outrebounded 40-to-27 and turned the ball over 12 times while only forcing seven turnovers.

The team fell to 1-1 in the tournament with their last game being against the Midland Legacy Rebels.

The Roughnecks had a come from behind victory thanks to their willingness and determination to pull the game out and end the tournament with a win.

In the first half against Midland Legacy, Sundown was slow to respond as they found themselves trailing fast 25-13 at the half.

In the third quarter the Roughnecks were able to put together a run that outscored the Rebels 13-6 and would cut the lead down to five.

The fourth quarter is where Sundown was able to get it going on both sides of the ball as they held Midland to only five points in the fourth quarter while going on a 14 point run to win the game against the Rebels.

Only four Roughnecks got in on the scoring against Midland including leading scorer Evan who had 14 points with six of those points coming from the fourth quarter.

Sanders had another 12 points to add for the team, Martinez had nine and Escamilla finished the game with five.

The Roughnecks finished the tournament strong and progressed to 2-4 on the year and will be in another tournament over the weekend in Farwell.
