Whitharral Boys travel to Dora, N.M. for Tournament

The Whitharral Panthers high school boys’ basketball team went 1-2 at the J.P. Stone Invitational Basketball Tournament in Dora, N.M. last weekend.

Whitharral dropped the opening game to the eventual tournament champion Logan Longhorns, then bounced back with wins over Amherst and Cloudcroft.

Logan 74, Whitharral 59

The Longhorns led the Panthers 22-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Whitharral fought their way back to within seven – 38-31 at halftime. The Panthers couldn’t hang on, however, and trailed 55-45 at the end of three.

Brent Robinson and Nomar Gomez had 15 points apiece. Jack Griffin had 11. Nate Sansom had 10.

Damian Rodriguez had four. Landon Lee and Rayden Potter had two each.

Whitharral 63, Amherst 22

The Panthers had little trouble with Amherst in round two with a 63-22 win.

Whitharral led 13-5 at the end of the first quarter and 32-12 at halftime. The third quarter score was 44-17 for Whitharral.

Sansom had 19 points. Griffin had 12. Lee had nine. Robinson, Gomez and Brolin Kennedy each had six. Potter had three. Rodriguez had two.

Whitharral 62, Cloudcroft 32

The final round saw the Panthers jump ahead early and cruise to a 62-32 win.

The Panthers led 17-5 at the end of the first quarter and 38-14 at halftime. Whitharral was up 5524 in the third period.

Sansom had 12. Gomez had 11. Griffin and Damian Rodriguez had eight apiece. Robinson and Lee each had six. Brier Mellberg had five. Potter had four. Kennedy had two.

The Panthers will be in New Deal on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
