The Whitharral Panthers took on the Borden County Coyotes this past Friday for their UIL Boys Basketball area round matchup in Lamesa where the Panthers won 55-47.
The first quarter of the game started off with Whitharral trailing the Coyotes by one point at the end of the quarter. Borden County had outscored the Panthers 9-8 after getting four of their points from inside the paint while Whitharral had six of their points come from long range.
For the second quarter of the game Whitharral bounced back as they had 15 points fall for them before the half while they only allowed 11 points. Whitharral was able to grab the lead at the half with their amazing shooting from long range.
The score at the halftime break was Whitharral leading 2320.
Leading the Panthers in scoring at the half was Nomar Gomez as he had 15 points, all of his points coming from beyond the arch.
Going into the third quarter of the game Whitharral would extended their lead as they had another 16 points fall for them while they held the Coyotes to just 10 points going into the fourth quarter of the game. Seven of the Panthers third quarter points came from Jack Griffin’s good free throw shooting as he went 7-for-8. The score at the end of the third had Whitharral leading 39-30.
For the final quarter of the game it would be the Panthers that would hold off the Coyote offense as Whitharral got outscored 17-16 in the end but it wasn’t enough to take back the lead as the Panthers took the playoff win.
Gomez led his team in scoring on the night with 18 points, all of his points coming from long range.
Brent Robinson had another 15 points, Griffin finished with nine points, Nate Samson had another seven points, Rayden Potter had four and Brolin Kennedy finished with two points in the teams win.
The Whitharral Panthers took on the Klondike Cougars this past Tuesday at Frenship High School for their regional quarterfinal matchup in basketball playoffs.
