Antelopes, Lady Lopes earn district wins against Seagraves

This past Friday, the Whiteface Antelopes and Lady Lopes both hosted and beat each respective Seagraves team. The Lady Lopes started the night with a 65-20 win over the Seagraves Lady Eagles, marking their 17th consecutive win to improve to 21-2 overall and 2-0 in district play.

The win was powered by double digit scoring efforts from Emily Blankenship, Keyarah Castaneda, Kambry Sanders and Gracyn Kauffman.

Blankenship scored 17 points, going 8/10 on free throw attempts, Castaneda scored 16 points, Kambry Sanders scored 15 points behind two three-pointers made and Kauffman scored 10 points.

Following the Lady Lopes win, the Antelopes took care of business as well, securing a 53-33 victory over the Seagraves Eagles to improve to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in district play.

“It was a great way to open district play,” Antelopes Head Basketball Coach Brandon Flores said. “Our defense did a great job of adjusting as the game went on, only allowing 12 points in the entire second half. There are definitely some things we need to work on before our next game, but we are heading in the right direction.”

Ivaniel Gandara led the Antelopes offense in the win, scoring 18 points, making two three-pointers and 4/6 free throws.

Cesar Chavez and Isaak Soliz also scored in double figures; Chavez had 12 points and Soliz had 10 points. Other scorers included Victor Borunda with eight points and Jose Flores with five points.

Following their wins, both Whiteface teams return to play early in the week for district matchups at home against two really good Ropes teams.

Then they’ll head on the road on Friday to play district foe Smyer. The girls play at 6:15 p.m. and the boys play at 7:30 p.m.
