Indians beat Bobcats, Lady Cats beat Maidens

This past Tuesday, Morton hosted Smyer for a basketball doubleheader, with the Indians beating the Bobcats, 58-24, and the Lady Cats beating the Maidens, 74-53.

In the Indians win over the Bobcats, they outshot them 31% to 24% from the field, also winning the team statistical categories of transition points, points off turnovers, second chance points, points in the paint, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals and turnovers.

The biggest difference in the game was rebounding and the turnover margin, with the Indians collecting 15 more rebounds and forcing 18 more turnovers than they committed.

EJ Rivas had a great performance in the win with 22 points on 9/21 shooting, nine rebounds, five steals, four assists and a block, along with Britton Boggs who recorded 15 points, eight rebounds and an assist.

Other standouts included Jaeden Alvarado with 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and an assist, Travion Holland with five points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists, and Rafael Acevedo with nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.

The win improves the Indians to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in district play, while it drops Smyer to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in district play.

Standouts for the Bobcats in the loss included Max Benevedes with eight points, 10 rebounds, two steals and an assist, Gage Pastusek with four points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal, Alex Mattox with four points, three rebounds, a steal and an assist, and Austin Martinez with three points, six rebounds and a steal.

In the girl’s game, the roles were reversed with the Lady Cats blowing out the Maidens by 21 points to improve to 16-5 overall and 2-1 in district play.

Leading scorers for the Lady Cats included Jada Hernandez with 18 points, Kaia Brandon and Ellie Nelson both with 15 points, and Rylee Riedel with eight points.

Leading scorers for the Maidens included Addy Sabala with 21 points, Haylee Toscano with 18 points behind five three-pointers made and Khloe Aguirre with five points.
