Lady Eagles defeat Maidens, 64-32

The Morton Maidens hosted the Ropes Lady Eagles for a district basketball matchup this past Wednesday, resulting in the Lady Eagles winning 64-32.

The win improves the Lady Eagles to 19-9 overall and 7-2 in district play, which ties them for second in the 2A District 5 standings.

Scorers for the Lady Eagles in the win included Zailyn Wylie with 16 points behind 6/9 free throws made, Rylie Lester with 15 points behind two three-pointers made, Brooklyn Hogg with 11 points, Macie Lehnen with 10 points, Karli Rhoads with four points, Sydney Brooks with three points, Ella Lehnen and Annabelle Falls both with two points, and Kamdyn Matus with one point.

On the Maidens side of things, the loss drops them to 11-17 overall and 3-6 in district play, which puts them fifth in the 2A District 5 standings.

“We played them close for three quarters,” Maid- ens Interim Head Basket - ball Coach Martin Adams said. “Fourth quarter just got away from us. Missed shots late hurt us. The girls played hard. It was one of the best- rounded games we played all year. Just hoped for more shots to fall.”

Scorers for the Maidens included Addy Sabala with 10 points behind two threepointers made, Blaize Garza with seven points, Haylee Toscano and Khloe Aguirre both with five points, Ada Torrez with four points and J’Lynn Marquez with one point.

It was a valiant effort against a good team, but a brutal result for their playoff chase. The Maidens are battling Smyer for the fourth and final district playoff spot, but they trail the Lady Cats by two games now, so they will a few need things to go their way.

They’ll get their shot to close the gap over the weekend against Smyer, meanwhile the Lady Eagles will host Whiteface.
