Antelopes beat Bobcats, 71-19, stay alive in playoff chase

The Whiteface Antelopes hosted the Smyer Bobcats for a district basketball matchup this past Tuesday night, resulting in a 71-19 Antelopes win.

The win improves the Antelopes to 11-11 overall and 4-5 in district play, which ties them for fourth in the 2A District 5 standings.

Not only was the result crucial because it keeps the Antelopes alive in the playoff chase, but they also got to work on some of their weaknesses in the process.

“Our guys did a good job of executing the game plan,” Antelopes Head Basketball Coach Brandon Flores said. “We wanted to get out and run and score in transition and shoot the ball. Two things I feel we haven’t been doing well. Hopefully we can keep that going.”

If the scorebook is any indicator, they executed their gameplan to perfection as Coach Flores noted, led by Ivaniel Gandara with 29 points behind six threepointers made and Cesar Chavez with 19 points.

Other Antelopes scorers included Isaak Soliz with 10 points, Victor Borunda with seven points, and Joses Flores and Alex Hernandez both with three points.

On the Bobcats side of things, the loss drops them to 3-17 overall and 0-9 in district play, which puts them last in the 2A District 5 standings.

Scorers for the Bobcats included Austin Martinez with 14 points behind two three-pointers made, Sebastian Rodriguez and Max Benevedes both with two points, and Grady Pastusek with one point.

Following the game, the Antelopes travel to face Plains and the Bobcats host Seagraves over the weekend.
