Lady Cats beat Van Horn, 62-25, to win Bi-District Championship

The Smyer Lady Cats squared off against Van Horn in a Bi-District playoff matchup this past Monday night at Wink High School, resulting in the Lady Cats winning 62-25 to secure the Bi-District Championship.

The two teams were in a gridlock tied 9-9 after the first quarter, which the Lady Cats would respond to by outscoring Van Horn 16-0 in the second quarter, and they’d only build the lead from there, running away with the playoff victory.

“I was really proud of our girls last night,” Lady Cats Head Basketball Coach Todd Nichols said. “We came out struggling to score just a little bit. But they turned up the defensive effort, and we shut them out in the second quarter to really spark a big run for the rest of the game. I’m excited to keep the run going.”

As Coach Nichols alluded to, those offensive struggles were short-lived as eight Lady Cats got on the board, including the trio of Krislyn Bolton, Kaia Brandon and Jada Hernandez, who all scored in double-figures.

Brandon and Bolton both scored 13, while Hernandez scored 12. Other Lady Cats scorers included Ellie Nelson with nine points, Kenzie Zapata with six points, Vannah Jourden with four points, Tessa Perez with three points and Kira Posadas with two points.

The win improves the Lady Cats to 21-10 overall this season and advances them to the Area Round of the playoffs.

They’ll face Sterling City at Sands High School over the weekend, who’s 23-9 overall this season and finished third in 2A District 7.
