Lobos defeat Rangers in district win, 76-52

Levelland Lobos start District 3-4A play with a win, 76-53 over the Perryton Rangers.

The Lobos showed up in all three phases of the game, scoring 10 total offensive touchdowns, recording two interceptions, recovering three kickoffs, and blocking a punt.

“It takes three units to win; that’s special teams, defense, and offense,” Levelland’s Head Coach Lyle Leong said. “Every unit taking pride in their unit and doing a good job.”

Entering the second quarter, the game was tied 21-21 until running back Jake Potter ran a 66-yard touchdown to give the Lobos a 28-27 lead. Immediately following the touchdown and the extra point, the Lobos recovered the squid kick, setting up quarterback Ethan Salazar for a one-yard quarterback sneak score for the Lobos to take a 3527 lead.

Levelland continues to roll in the second quarter, scoring 35 total points before halftime. Coach Leong credits his coaching staff efforts for the second-quarter surge.

“We got great coaches that came up with some great suggestions,” Leong said. “That’s what teams are about: working together, finding a way to get it done.”

Coming off a bye week, the Lobos were able to get some key players back on the field from injury, especially wide receiver and defensive back Braelyn Johnson, who contributed on both sides in his return “He did a great job coming back, catching the ball, and making a difference in the game,” Leong said about Johnson, who got an interception and a receiving touchdown versus Perryton.

Levelland (5-2, 1-0) now stands in third place in District 3-4A heading into their next district matchup versus Borger (2-6, 0-2) on the road at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23.

“Every team in our district is good,” Leong said. “It doesn’t get easier from here on out; it gets harder and harder every week.”
