For the first time since the 2018-2019 season, the Levelland Lobos’ football team has won four consecutive games in a season after the 41- 18 win over the Borger Bulldogs.
Levelland started the season 2-2 after losing 44-0 versus Sweetwater on Sept. 18; since then, the Lobos have tailed off four straight wins, including two district wins. The Lobos now stand with a 6-2 overall record and 2-0 in District 3-4A.
“Just hard-working kids and great coaches,” Levelland’s head coach Lyle Leong said.
“They told me once, ‘You get a job, hire smarter people.”
The Lobos earned their fourth straight win by forcing five total turnovers, consistently gaining good field position for the offense to score.
In the opening quarter, junior defensive back Bryson Golightly recovers a fumble and returns it for a 98-yard touchdown.
Later that quarter the Lobos recover another fumble that sets up a short yard quarterback sneak touchdown for senior quarterback Ethan Salazar, taking the 14-0 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Lobos sealed the game with sophomore defensive back Bentley Sepulbeda snagging an interception on a deep pass attempt from Borger.
The next matchup for Levelland (6-2, 2-0) district will be versus the top team in their district, Lubbock Liberty (8-0, 2-0). The Lobos will have a chance to take the number one spot with a win on Friday. “We don’t believe we’re playing Goliath; we’re just playing another team,” Leong said. “The put on their pants and lace up their shoes just like us.”
