Lady Cats win, Bobcats lose in Plains matchups

The Smyer Lady Cats and Bobcats both hosted and faced each respective Plains team for district basketball matchups this past Thursday, with the Lady Cats winning 72-42, and the Bobcats losing 65-29.

The Lady Cats win improves them to 18-7 overall and 4-3 in district play, which puts them fourth in the 2A District 5 standings.

Scorers in the win included Ellie Nelson with 30 points, Jada Hernandez with 20 points, Rylee Riedel with eight points, Kira Posadas with seven points, Kaia Brandon with three points, and Krislyn Bolton and Vannah Jourden both with two points.

Following the win, Lady Cats Head Basketball Coach Todd Nichols shared his thoughts, “I was really proud of how the girls adjusted to the schedule change and put together a good district win for us,” Coach Nichols said.

On the Bobcats side of things, the loss drops them to 3-14 overall and 0-6 in district play, which puts them last in the 2A District 5 standings.

Scorers in the loss included Austin Martinez with 15 points, Max Benevedes with six points, Alex Mattox with five points and Gage Pastusek with three points.

Both teams are back in action early in the week for district matchups at Sundown before hosting Morton on Friday. Against Morton, the girls play at 6:15 p.m. and the boys play at 7:30 p.m.
