The #8 ranked Whitharral Lady Panthers basketball team traveled to Amherst to face the Lady Bulldogs in a district basketball matchup this past Tuesday night, destroying them 65-10.
The win marks their eighth in a row, improving them to 23-7 overall and 8-0 in district play, which puts them first in the 1A District 5 standings.
“I was pleased with how we took care of business last night,” Lady Panthers Head Basketball Coach Madison Ortega said. “We took care of the ball better, played solid defense and converted well on offense. We were able to get girls that have moved up from JV on the scoreboard, so that was fun.”
Seven of eight active roster players scored in the game for the Lady Panthers, led by Paige Smith with 24 points, followed by Valeria Frias with 12 points, Kalyn Bates with 11 points, Sheridan Neal with 10 points, Denae Sansom and Emma Gonzales both with three points, and Brooklyn Corrales with two points.
The Lady Panthers return to play over the weekend at home against Meadow before their final district matchup on Tuesday on the road against the Anton Lady Dawgs.
The matchup between the Lady Panthers and Lady Dawgs has district title implications, barring each team wins their weekend matchups.
If they do, then a Lady Panthers win would secure them the exclusive district title, or a Lady Dawgs win would make them Co-District Champions with Whitharral. The game is at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Anton.
