The Sundown Roughnecks hosted the Morton Indians for a crucial district basketball matchup in the playoff chase, resulting in the Roughnecks winning 6650.
The Roughnecks exploded in the first half, entering halftime up 38-18, a deficit that the Indians would never recover from.
“We played with an awesome grit and determination,” Roughnecks Head Basketball Coach Kyle Igo said. “We got off to a great start; the kids really executed and competed. It was a great win. It sets up an exciting next week. One game at a time is where our focus is.”
Scorers for the Roughnecks included Kye Powell with 19 points, Nathan McAdams with 13 points, Josh Hogan with 12 points, Isaiah Igo with eight points, and Brock Bufe and Athan Peralez both with seven points.
The win improves Sundown to 14-12 overall and 4-5 in district play, which puts them fourth in the 2A District 5 standings.
On the Indians side of things, the loss drops them to 9-16 overall and 4-6 in district play, which ties them with Whiteface for fifth in the 2A District 5 standings.
Scorers for the Indians included Brayden Villarreal with 13 points behind three three-pointers made, EJ Rivas with 13 points, Travion Holland with 10 points, Jaeden Alvarado with seven points, Britton Boggs with five points and Rafael Ace vedo with two points.
The result is certainly detrimental to Morton’s playoff hopes, but they still have a chance to sneak into the postseason.
They have a bye early in the week, and then they have two final district matchups against Whiteface and Seagraves. They travel to face Whiteface on Friday night at 6:15 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Roughnecks travel to face White- face first, early in the week before facing Seagraves on the road on Friday at 6:15 p.m. Then they’ll conclude district play against Ropes next week.
The playoff chase is still wide open for the third and fourth playoff seeds in 2A District 5, and it’s all dependent on the outcomes of Morton, Sundown, Whiteface and Seagraves’ remaining district games.
