(Staff photo by Jentezen Smith) The Smyer Bobcats hosted the Sundown Roughnecks for a district basketball matchup this past Friday, resulting in a 73-15 win for Sundown.
The Roughnecks applied excellent on-ball pressure defensively to force several Smyer turnovers, which they parlayed into a lot of transition points and easy buckets.
“We came out early and played very connected and aggressive,” Roughnecks Head Basketball Coach Kyle Igo said. “We played solid all 32 minutes. Great team effort.”
The Roughnecks were led by Kye Powell with 23 points in the win, followed by Josh Hogan with 16 points, Isaiah Igo with 11 points, Brock Bufe with eight points, Athan Peralez with seven points, and Marco Landa, Rylan Carr and Nathan Mc-Adams all with two points.
It was quite the showing as every Roughneck on the roster not only played, but scored, on a flawless night. Meanwhile it was nothing but frustration for the Bobcats.
Bobcats Head Basketball Coach Jared Colley noted that his team is being plagued by turnovers and offensive rebounds, and as a result they could never really get going against Sundown.
Scorers for the Bobcats included Austin Martinez with four points, Gage Pastusek, Wyatt Bartles and Max Benevedes all with three points, and Alex Mattox with two points.
Following the game, the Bobcats fall to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in district play, while the Roughnecks improve to 10-7 overall and 1-0 in district play.
They’ll both be back in action for district matchups early in the week. Then Smyer has a quick turnaround with a Friday matchup at home against Whiteface at 7:30 p.m., while Sundown won’t return to play until next Tuesday at Morton at 7:30 p.m.
