Anton comes from behind to win, 27-19

The Anton Lady Bulldogs came from behind to take a 27-19 home win from the Whitharral Lady Panthers, who are playing a junior varsity schedule due to low numbers, last Tuesday in high school girls’ basketball action. Whitharral led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and 12-11 at half-time.

Not everyone gets 1,500 points in a high school career, especially when that person misses more than 20 games in her junior season, but that is what Whiteface’s Allison Martha has done. Last season, Martha’s broken hand was part of a string of injuries the Lady Lopes had to work through.

Ropes one game behind Roughettes for second

The Ropes Lady Eagles, ranked 22nd in UIL class 2A got a 43-31 win over the Tahoka Lady Bulldogs in district 5-2A high school girls’ basketball action last Friday. Ropes led 10-2 in the first quarter and 24-7 at half-time. The Lady Eagles were ahead 35-19 at the end of three quarters.

Entering the meet as the No. 1 and No. 3 ranked teams, respectively, the South Plains College men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up their third meet of the season Saturday at the Texas Tech Open and Multis at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

Celia Sumbane netted a career-high 32 points as the South Plains College women’s basketball team overcame an eight-point second half deficit en route to a 64-61 conference win over Odessa College Saturday afternoon at the Texan Dome.

Slow start hurts Lobos in Snyder

The Levelland Lobos fall to 3-2 in district play after struggling offensively in Snyder, 49-43, Friday against the Tigers. Managing two points by free-throws in the first quarter, the Lobos fell behind quickly to the Tigers as they mustered 15 points before the end of the first quarter.

Celia Sumbane led all scorers with 20 points as the South Plains College women’s basketball team won its fifth straight conference game Thursday, pounding Western Texas 60-31 at Invenergy Court at the WTC Coliseum.
