Rural home owners need a defensive fire space

Barbara Peeler credits firefighters with saving her family’s ranch. When a fire started on a highway bordering the A.M. Peeler Ranch in southern Atascosa County in March, Peeler said the response from emergency crews was swift and powerful.

Loboettes win Littlefield Tournament

Panther’s coach named COY

Whitharral Panther head football coach Jeremy Holt is quick to give credit to others for his selection as UIL Class 1A-2 Region I coach of the year. “I have a great staff and great kids,” said Holt, who finished his inaugural season as head coach with a 12-2 record.

Texans extend win streak in Arizona

Christian Coleman recorded his sixth double-double of the season Tuesday, leading No. 14 South Plains past No. 19 Snow 80-60 in the opening round of the Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout at Theo Heap Gymnasium on the campus of Mesa Community College. SPC shot a 48.

RHS football nabs All-District honors

Several Ropes Eagles were named to the UIL Region I, District 4 All-District Football Team. Ropes finished their season at third place in district with a 4-7 overall record and 3-2 in district. In addition, several Eagles were also named academic alldistrict.

Girls basketball back on the court Dec. 30th

The Whitharral Lady Panthers downed the visiting Morton Maidens 31-28 in high school girls’ basketball action. Whitharral is playing a junior varsity schedule due to lack of numbers and injuries, so their season is officially considered a forfeit by the UIL.

Boys basketball ready for Caprock

The Smyer Bobcats were no match for the visiting Plains Cowboys in a 62-41 home loss last Tuesday in UIL high school basketball action. Smyer fell behind in the first quarter, trailing 14-8 at the buzzer. The half-time score saw Plains up, 31-19.

Lady Eagles soar against Roughettes

The Sundown Roughettes hosted the Plains Cowgirls to open district play Tuesday night and took a 57-43 victory. Allie McCormack led the 23 point first quarter scoring for Sundown with six points followed by Emma Holdman’s five. The Defense limited Plains to just 10 points in the quarter.

Lady Panthers down Amherst

The Whitharral Panthers had their hands full with the New Deal Lions last Tuesday in a 71-52 home loss. The Panthers are currently ranked no. 20 in UIL Class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. The Lions are ranked seventh in Class 2A.

Several Whiteface Antelopes received UIL Region II, Division 1 All-Region honors in addition to the all district honors. The Antelopes finished their season at 9-3 overall with a 3-0 district record and both a district and bi-district championship.
